Meet Member Artist Maureen Sorensen…

Maureen Sorensen is a prolific artist and Savage Arts Community member who has worked in many genres and media but is now focused mainly on crop art.

Maureen has entered multiple pieces in the Minnesota State Fair crop art competition and exhibition and received considerable attention for her beautiful work. 594 pieces were entered in this year’s crop art exhibit at the MN State Fair. Maureen entered 5 pieces in this year’s advanced category:

Her piece entitled Last Day in the Park with Quinoa won a 2nd place ribbon. This piece is a reproduction of Georges Seurat’s “Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte”.  Last Day in the Park with Quinoa was recognized by Minneapolis Star-Tribune as one of the top ten entries.

Maureen’s crop art piece, Bridge Over Troubled Water won a 2nd place ribbon. This work depicts Paul Bunyan strolling down the Mississippi with the SpoonBridge and Cherry hoisted high above his head along with Protest signs and Minneapolis’ buildings. This piece was entered in the Special Events Category—representing Minnesota’s response to Operation Metro Surge and the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award, 2026.

Another piece, The Spectacle, won a 3rd place ribbon and is a depiction of Olivia Miles, MN Lynx point guard, since named WNBA Rookie of the Year!

Maureen had another entry entitled Twine Ball which won a 1st place ribbon. This piece utilizing natural colored plant materials and crop seeds depicts the Largest Ball of Twine in Minnesota located in Darwin, MN.

Witness recreates an image captured by Star-Tribune’s Leila Navidi, and shows citizens capturing the ICE activity in a St. Paul neighborhood, including Sam Stroozas, a MPR journalist, who responded to the scene from the comfort of her own home, wearing a green bathrobe and fuzzy slippers.  The ICE agent in the foreground is made of plant materials include lamb’s ear, geranium leaves, poppy seeds, quinoa, and more.

Lastly, Dolly shows an unfinished piece that was started after Dolly Parton’s death and used as a demo piece. It has since been completed and donated to a charitable cause.

Twine Ball and Witness were chosen among 40 pieces from the State Fair Exhibit for Minneapolis Institute of Art’s Cream of the Crop, the Second Harvest show at the MIA running now through November 29.
