Who are we?
The Savage Area Arts Community (formerly Savage Arts Council) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit arts organization, started in Savage in 2007. Other than the Scott County Art Crawl, we have 10 years of experience in organizing local arts activities, including the Savage Juried Art Competition & Show, the Minnesota River Arts Fair, concerts, educational classes, and workshops, and other community events.
Why the new name?
The organization was renamed earlier this year to address community feedback that "Savage Arts Council" did not accurately reflect that over half of its members live in one of the cities just outside of Savage or that the organization was run by community-led volunteers. "Savage Area Arts Community" was chosen, because it provides more clarity and inclusivity.
What else changed in 2017?
This year, we also changed our vision statement to read "The Savage Area Arts Community inspires and nurtures the human creative spirit by enriching the community through artistic and educational events and programs".
Why all these changes now?
As preparation for our 10-year anniversary year, an advisor from the Kelly Vriezen Leadership Group lead a re-visioning retreat for the organization. This re-visioning helped us evaluate what 10 years "on the ground" in organizing and promoting arts, locally, has taught us about who we have evolved to be since the birth of the organization. This process has helped to clarify our vision and goals moving forward. These changes are a reflection of our greater understanding about who we are and what we want to achieve.
Who is this community?
Our community consists of anyone who values art from all over Scott and Dakota Counties. Our community includes professional artists, emerging artists, and non-artists (art appreciators), alike. If you live in this area and you value art, then this community is you. If you’d like to make it official, sign up as a member to receive a membership card and learn more about your arts community.
How can I actively be a part of my arts community?
There are many opportunities to get involved:
- Attend the Art Community Forum on Nov. 18 at 1:00 at the Savage Arts & Cultural Center (East entrance to the Savage Library). You will have an opportunity to learn more about what the Savage Area Arts Community does, give input on the direction you would like to see the arts community take in the future, and learn how you can be a part of it. Plus, there will be light refreshments and a tutorial on how to make a rock mandala (supplies provided). We hope you can make it to this free event!
- Become a member! With your $20 membership, you will receive updates to art events coming up. You will also be asked a short survey, so we can send you invitations to events that are specific to your interests.
- Sign up to volunteer! Volunteering is a great way to "plug in" and give back your arts community. Our events are completely run by volunteers, so whether you volunteer a few hours at an event or choose to support your arts community ongoing through the year, your time and effort is valued and appreciated.
- Contact us! If you are still looking for a way to connect, contact us at info@SavageAreaArts.org and we will get in touch with you!
